Australia finds record drug haul among Thai terracotta pots

SYDNEY?? Australian police on Tuesday seized a record half a ton of the drug ice and heroin worth up to A$500 million ($525 million) hidden in a shipment of terracotta pots from Thailand.

Seven people, including four from Hong Kong, were arrested after a year-long investigation following a tip-off from U.S. authorities, police said.

The 306 kg of methamphetamine, also known as ice, was Australia's biggest seizure of the drug, while the 252 kg of heroin was the nation's third largest-haul of heroin.

"At the end of the day, there's a lot of 'Mr Mediums' and 'Mr Littles' that work with 'Mr Big'," Deputy Commissioner Andrew Colvin told reporters. "I think we've got a good combination of the people responsible for this importation."

The drugs were found hidden in a shipment of 3,200 terracotta pots at Sydney's Port Botany.

Those arrested were charged with conspiracy to import illicit drugs and holding a commercial quantity of illicit drugs. The charges carry a maximum penalty of life in jail.

"We're talking about a significant quantity of two separate types of substances which generally have different source countries," Colvin said, adding the investigation was continuing and further arrests were possible.

State radio systems upgrade could cut regional dispatchers out of ...

Regional dispatchers are worried they will be out of the communications loop after state public safety departments such as state police, warden and forestry services and marine patrol upgrade their radio communication systems from analog to digital.

The upgrade for the state departments, known as the MS Comnet project, carries a price tag of about $55 million, and when it is done will allow state public safety officials from Kittery to Madawaska to communicate via radio, according to Jim Ryan, executive director for Penobscot County Regional Communications.

But regional dispatch centers will need to upgrade to digital systems to hear the new transmissions.

And Ryan said when the state originally went out to sell the upgrade to legislators and community officials they proposed an analog system. In anticipation, Penobscot County purchased analog equipment to coordinate with the state, the state announced they were going digital, he said.

He said it would cost $500,000 for Penobscot County to acquire new equipment that would be compatible with the state system.

Knox County Regional Communications Center Director Linwood Lothrop also expressed similar concerns about the new state radio system and said it would make it more difficult for county dispatches to keep track of what is going on with state units.

Lt. Col. Raymond Bessette of the Maine State Police said the digital upgrade has been necessary for years to meet capacity needs for state emergency personnel.

The upgrade will allow many more radio frequencies that will serve emergency responders when they respond to escalating situations.

Bessette said the state asked the vendor for the radio upgrade to allow its county and municipal partners to hear the state radio communications and that will be done.

The public will also be able to follow the radio communications, although they will need to purchase digital scanners, he said.

You know that you see the light at the end of the tunnel, but are you sure it is not the headlight of the oncoming train? ?Here are some sure signs that you are heading straight for bankruptcy

1. Denial ? Life is good, I my job is stable, I?m making all my payments and I am not in default of anything. ?Really? ?Take a look around. ?How any people do you know have retired from the same job they started at age 25? ?What would happen to your finances if you suddenly got sick and could not work? ?Or your employer decides to close up shop and move production overseas? ?Have you taken any time to think about the future and what it might contain? ?What does retirement look like? ?What contingency plans do you have if your situation suddenly goes very wrong? ?Bankruptcy is never a first choice, but it may be the only choice when you fail to plan.
2. Liabilities exceed assets. ?Do this simple exercise: ?Write down a list of everything you owe. ?Not what you have to pay every month such as utilities and food, but what you OWE and who you owe it to. ?Now write down a list a everything you own. ?You don?t have to get detailed, but a house, cares, bank accounts, general furniture and other possessions should be relatively easy. ?Now put a value of what you might be able to get for those items if you had to suddenly sell them. ?Not what you paid for them, but what you could reasonably expect to get if you threw everything in the driveway and had a tag sale. ?Put aside sentimental blue, put aside the ?investment? value ? what is your stuff really worth? ?Now subtract the total of your debt from your assets. ?Is that a negative number? ?For 95% of all U.S. residents, it is. ?Bankruptcy might help you dump some of those debts while allowing you to keep some of those assets. ?It can improve your bottom line.
3. Expenses?exceed income. ?Bow lets undertake a similar exercise. ?First, write down all sources of income you get in a month. ?Net pay, not gross. ?What is the amount you have available to use. ?Now write down what it cost to live every month. ?Food, lights, heat, rent/mortgage, gas for the car, insurance, etc, but not your debt payments. ?Total that all up. ?Now subtract that total from your total income. ?Is that a negative number? ?Now add up all your debt payments and subtract that from the number. ?Even more negative? ?Or maybe the number only goes negative when subtracting the debt payments.
4. Savings are non-existent. ?When looking at the assets/liabilities review outlined in step 2 above, was a savings account part of your asset picture? ?Is there room in your budget determined in step 3 above for some savings plan? ?Part of the way to avoid denying that there will ever be a problem is planning for one to happen. ?Flat tires or illness can never be expected, but you can plan for them. ?If you have a savings plan to cover the cost of that halt tire replacement or the unexpected doctor bill or prescription drug, your budget can absorb the unexpected expense. ?Some experts recommend starting with a $1,000 savings account, others recommend saving at least three months of income for the unexpected loss of a job. ?If your budget does not allow for a savings plan, then a bankruptcy may change your expenses enough to start one.
5. Look at your history. ?Once you start to change your thinking about your finances, it is sometimes hard to get away from kicking yourself. ?Remember, this is not about blame. ?It is about taking the blinders off and looking at reality. ?You bought your home for $100,000 ten years ago and now you owe $200,000 on it. ?While it is important to understand that you spent $10,000 a year more than you earned by taking money out of your home, don?t let it drag you down. ?Instead look at how you are going to pay off your 30 year mortgage now that you are 40 years old before you reach 70. ?Who wants to be paying a mortgage when you are retired? ?Maybe you don;t care, but then it is important to look at your mortgage payment as ask yourself whether you would pay that amount in rent for that home. ?Since you are never going to pay off the loan, that is what you are effectively doing. ?Only by looking backward can you charge the behavior you need to succeed going forward. ?Bankruptcy is a way of recognizing the mistakes you have made in the past, accepting them and making the changes you need so you don?t continue repeating them. ?Insanity is sometimes defined as repeating the same behavior and expecting a different result.

I don't mean to be a kill joy but i am also just trying to help out, Perhaps change your title to something like this.

"Pokemon Mutations!" It looks a bit more professional.

Also add pictures to the opening page so it doesn't look so dull and plain, it attracts roleplayers in to the story more when they have something to base their visualizations off of. Perhaps put pictures of the lab or even just a picture of Pokebrids! Something to make the main page say "I am serious about running this roleplay!"

Glasgow Rangers move to fourth tier approved

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) - Glasgow Rangers will begin next season in the fourth tier, Scotland's lowest professional league, after the move was approved by the country's soccer authorities on Friday.

The Scottish Football League announced that agreement had been reached following weeks of discussions to allow a reformed Rangers conditional membership in the Scottish Football Association.

Rangers, Scottish champion a record 54 times, were put in bankruptcy protection because of tax debts exceeding $30 million. The team is now set to visit grounds with seats for just a few hundred fans next season.

Americans Carlos Bocanegra, Maurice Edu and Alejandro Bedoya are on Rangers but may leave.

Wealth managers are making alternative investments more of a priority to meet the expectations of their clients and help grow total assets under management.

The easiest explanation of alternative investments is simply anything that is not a traditional investment (stocks/equities, bonds or cash). This simple explanation means there is a wide range of alternative investments that differ greatly in their composition and scope. Alternative investments are divided into two categories: alternative asset classes and alternative strategies.? According to a study from McKinsey & Company, which examined alternative investments including hedge funds, real estate investments, private equity, commodities and infrastructure,? volatile financial markets and retirement savings gaps are prompting individuals to?seek more investment options?while minimizing risk.

Among these options are regulated mutual funds and ETFs which are then sold through traditional retail distribution channels.

By the end of last year, alternative investments had reached $6.5 trillion in global assets under management and, according to McKinsey, that number will? only increase in the years ahead.

U.S. alternative investment allocation is projected to increase to 28% of total portfolio assets by end of 2013, accounting for 25% of total retail fund revenue in 2015. The study also shows 100% of U.S. investors and 70% of European investors expect alternative investments to outperform traditional asset management products.

With the new alternative investment boom, some alternative managers specializing in alternatives are experiencing growing pains.

Exclusive: Carlyle, CVC, TPG weigh final bids for Getty

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Three private equity firms, including Carlyle Group LP and CVC Capital Partners , are weighing final bids for Getty Images, as the auction of the digital media company enters its last leg, according to people familiar with the matter.

TPG Capital also remains in the auction and is considering a final bid for Getty, the people said. The largest supplier of stock photos, video and other digital content could be valued at as much as $4 billion, they said.

Final bids for Getty Images are due on August 6, they added.

Other buyout firms that had earlier taken a look, such as KKR & Co and Charterhouse , have dropped out of the process, the people said.

A sale would come more than four years after private equity firm Hellman & Friedman LLC bought a majority stake in Getty in a $2.4 billion deal.

All the buyout firms declined to comment. Representatives for Hellman & Friedman and Getty did not have any immediate comment.

A potential deal for Getty Images underscores robust appetite for secondary buyouts - sales from one private equity firm to another - as the industry is flush with capital it is looking to put to work, and the initial public offering market remains choppy.

Since the 2008 buyout, Getty has grown earnings through more acquisitions and the company could fetch $3.5 billion to $4 billion in a sale, three of the people said.

The business has also enjoyed increasing demand for its online imagery products and services, and this could lead to Getty fetching a higher valuation multiple, they said.

Hellman has tapped Goldman Sachs Group Inc and JPMorgan Chase & Co to examine a possible sale or public offering, sources told Reuters in May.

In March, Hellman and the company's minority shareholders reaped a $379 million dividend from Getty funded with debt and $115 million of cash. This followed a $504 million dividend at the end of 2010.

In credit notes in March, ratings agency Moody's Investors Service said Getty's latest dividend recapitalization led to a "moderately high" debt-to-EBITDA leverage of 4.4 times compared to 3.5 times pre-dividend. Getty had revenues of about $945 million in 2011.

Mindfulness lets you detangle yourself from the grip of this false sense of reality, step back and detach from your fusion to your idea of self, and observe reality with more openness and acknowledgment. Target your mindful awareness with as much persistence and practice as those thoughts, emotions, and sensations have with convincing you of their messages.

Think about how long it has taken you in the years of your life to become thoroughly convinced of the inherent validity to your thoughts, feelings, and sensations as they arise. Start to embark upon a new journey toward viewing your lived experience with openness, curiosity, and acceptance without judgment. Instead of assuming that thoughts are true as they arise in your consciousness, see them, observe every part of them, and question them.

Observe how much better it starts to feel as you remove yourself from the paralysis of being fused to your experience. This is pure awareness. This is mindfulness.

The loader cap holds about 50 shots worth of table salt. And since it fires salt, it?s non-toxic. The gun isn?t a toy, Maggiore cautions, and should be treated with respect.?

While it won?t penetrate skin or furniture, it could cause damage to the eyes, he notes.?

President Barack Obama pauses as he talks about the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting as he addresses the National??In his broadest remarks on gun control yet in the aftermath of the mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater, President Barack Obama called late Wednesday for tougher background checks designed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.

"A lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals -- that they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities," the president, who has called for reimposing the Assault Weapons Ban, said in a speech to the National Urban League.

"I believe the majority of gun owners would agree that we should do everything possible to prevent criminals and fugitives from purchasing weapons; that we should check someone's criminal record before they can check out a gun seller; that a mentally unbalanced individual should not be able to get his hands on a gun so easily," he said. "These steps shouldn't be controversial. They should be common sense."

But Obama also offered a nod to the difficult politics of gun control, portraying himself as a believer in the individual right to bear arms, and acknowledging that calls to action after an incident like the one in Aurora often fade.

"When there is an extraordinarily heartbreaking tragedy like the one we saw, there's always an outcry immediately after for action. And there's talk of new reforms, and there's talk of new legislation," Obama said in his speech. ?"And too often, those efforts are defeated by politics and by lobbying and eventually by the pull of our collective attention elsewhere."

"And I, like most Americans, believe that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual the right to bear arms.? And we recognize the traditions of gun ownership that passed on from generation to generation -? that hunting and shooting are part of a cherished national heritage," he said.

The president also singled out youth violence, and warned that government can only do so much. "It's up to us, as parents and as neighbors and as teachers and as mentors, to make sure our young people don't have that void inside them," he said.

(It's unclear how much political capital Obama will risk in an election-year gun-control fight. On the way to Aurora on Sunday, White House press secretary Jay Carney was asked whether there would be no renewed push for the assault weapons ban. "I wouldn't argue with your assessment about that," Carney replied. And White House officials have repeatedly emphasized that they are focused on enforcing "existing law.")

On a lighter note, Obama warned American school kids that they have to "hit the books" if they want to compete with their peers in rising economic powers -- and avoid temptations like TV's "Real Housewives."

"You're competing against young people in Beijing and Bangalore. They're not hanging out. They're not getting over.? They're not playing video games.? They're not watching 'Real Housewives.' ?I'm just saying: It's a two-way street.? You've got to earn success," he said.

"That wasn't in my prepared remarks," he said, to laughter from the crowd. "But I'm just saying."
