The Uganda Cancer Institute is seeking for funds from Parliament to set up regional treatment centers to ease the burden it currently shoulders.

According to the Director of the unit, Dr. Jackson Orem, the unit is the only cancer center in the country and caters for more than 1000 patients yet it has inadequate manpower to handle them.

Dr. Orem further says that Lacor Hospital, which had a cancer treatment center has since closed, which means all patients have to go to Mulago, which is in turn expensive.

He says the equipment needed for chemotherapy is outdated and needs replacement, adding that for better treatment of patients, the unit needs an urgent overhaul.

Dr. Orem is now appealing to Parliament to increase funding to the unit, as well as fund centers in the country for easy access to patients with cancer related ailments.
